Title: Research cluster 'General conditions' - Thermal insulation in special cases
Description: Among existing buildings, there are many cases in which the requirements of the German Energy Saving Ordinance (Energieeinsparverordnung - (EnEV 2007) cannot be applied to their full extend. They are subject to economic, structural and historical factors, e.g. the applied refurbishment measures must not lead to any damage of the building structure, and the original appearance of historical buildings must be preserved. For these reasons, the Energy Saving Ordinance has the means to apply for an exemption on the basis of an hardship clause. However, if this exception is claimed, the building s energy saving potential can not be exploited to its full extent. When structural changes are made on existing buildings, these changes have to meet certain standards that are defined by the German Energy Saving Ordinance (Energieeinsparverordnung- EnEV 2007). These standards pertain either to the energy performance of the building as a whole or to the heat transfer coefficients (U-value) of single structural elements. All requirements of the Energy Saving Ordinance are subject to economic, structural and historical factors. The energy cost savings achieved by the applied refurbishment measures should amortize within the buildings remaining economic life and the applied refurbishment measures must not lead to any damage of the building structure. In addition, when structural changes are made to historical buildings, the original appearance must be preserved. For these reasons, the Energy Saving Ordinance has the means to apply for an exemption on the basis of an hardship clause (Härtefallklausel). However, if this exception is claimed, the building s energy saving potential can not be exhausted to its full extent. In order to find suitable solutions for this problem, the following building situations were chosen for further investigation as they represent typical cases that often lead to an application for exemption: - Buildings with specialist facade design, such as fair-faced concrete surfaces, fair-faced brickwork or stucco. - Timber-framed buildings with exposed timber framing. - Thermal bridging in external walls, e.g. cantilevering ceiling slabs. - Accessible roofs. - Ground floor slabs in buildings without a basement that can, therefore, not be insulated from below. - Staggered terraced houses, where the necessary insulation thickness would protrude beyond the property line. The projects aim was to develop refurbishment strategies, especially for the above listed special cases, that allow the application of the Energy Saving Ordinances requirements to a large extend.
