Clusters of Excellence 80 (EXC): The Future Ocean, Sea Floor Warming - The occurrence and relevance of nitrogen fixation in sediments of oxygen minimum zones

Description: The aim of this project is to test the hypothesis that nitrogen fixation is stimulated in organic-rich surface sediments of marine oxygen minimum zones (OMZ s) and represents an important link between nitrogen and sulfur cycling via N2-fixing sulfate-reducing bacteria. A multidisciplinary set of methods (microbial rate measurements, nifH-gene analyzes, 15N-labelling, HISH-SIMS, CARD-FISH, porewater geochemistry) will be applied to sediments from different OMZ s (off Peru, off Mauretania, Koljø Fjord).
