Debris Flows: Contribution to the Reduction of Debris Flow Damage, with the Analysis of Triggering Factors, Initiation, Propagation and Deposition Phenomena, in the Alpine Region

Description: The contribution of the Swiss partners were concentrated on (i) the evaluation of triggering factors, (ii) the back analysis of past events, and (iii) the statistical analysis of several debris flow parameters. Rainfall thresholds to trigger debris flows were compiled using various rainfall information (rain gauges, rainfall radar). The analysis included debris flow events and so-called 'non-events' (strong rainfall occurred but no geomorphologic activity on the ground). A total of 113 cases could be analysed. Threshold values (intensity-duration relations) could be established for Inneralpine and Alpine border regions. Time series of debris flow events were established for 17 channels to study the magnitude/frequency context of Alpine debris flows. For most cases a period of 150 years could be covered. For a few rivers information about past debris flows was available for over 300 years. Four types of recurrence intervals could be found. The statistical analysis of debris flow parameters was based on a data base containing nearly 200 events. Parameters of the starting zones, the flow path and accumulation area, and of volumetric information could be evaluated.
