LIFE04, Demonstration of a closed circuit system resulting in a substantial odour emission reduction and energy saving during oilseed pressing

Description: Project Background: During pressing of rapeseed to make vegetable oil, steam containing large quantities of glucosinolatis released into the atmosphere. Measurements of odour strength (168 Mega Odour Units p/h)illustrate the serious consequences for people living near pressing plants, in terms of air pollution andair quality.Washing the vapours using a scrubber, and condensing the steam and glucosinolate into a water tankcan remove a large part of the glucosinolate.Project ObjectivesThe project will develop an innovative heat exchanger for use in the rapeseed pressing process thatwill: Reduce overall energy demand by 5-8 percent Convert astandard heat exchanger to preheat oil seeds without loss of quality or risk of pollution Set up an integrated circuit to reduce air pollution and odour strength by at least 20-30 percentusing natural means and without the need for additives Promote the findings to other oil seed mills, other industries with preheating requirements andthat use steam heating, and other interested parties.
