Title: Utilization potential for bio-compost on agriculturally utilized areas in Rhineland Palatinate
Description: With the upcoming introduction of the federal german Ordinance on Biological Waste (BioAbfV.1997), the agricultural utilization of composted biological and plant residue wastes will be regulated. In Rhineland-Palatinate up to 63 Prozent of the population is connected to seperate collection of biological wastes by so-called bio container. Plant-residue wastes are collected in all districts e.g. at therefore intended places. The volume of produced compost will increase enormously if the biological wastes are collected area wide in Rhineland-Palatinate. Focal point of the study carried out by the Institute of Environmental Engineering at the Univercity of Kaiserslautern is the investigation of the potentials for the agricultural utilization of composted biological and plant residue wastes in Rhineland-Palatinate. The study is commissioned by the rhineland-palatinate Ministry for Environment and Forestry. A Consideration of the quality of the already produced composts in Rhineland-Palatinate shows that they can be characterised as very good. The average concentration of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphate, potassium) is about as high as stated in literture and the heavy metal content (lead, cadium, copper, mercury) is relativly low. In some cases the agricultural utilization can be unadviseable due to high heavy metal concentrations in soil. But if compost is applicated appropriatly, it generally should not be a potential threat for the agricultural products and the environment. The carried out area and nutrient based balances result in a sufficient potential for the agricultural utilization of the increasing amounts of produeced composts in Rhineland-Palatinate.
