Title: Geotextiles based on Sensors for Application in Dyke Reinforcement
Description: Our project focuses on geotextiles, which serve the purpose of both dyke reinforcement and dyke monitoring. We like to develop a monitoring system that detects any fault zone in a dyke reliably and in early time. Dyke reinforcement and dyke monitoring. The goal of our project is to develop innovative textile structures with integrated fibre optical sensors, with the structures themselves being suitable to reinforce dykes. In the case of flooding, they are designed to indicate spots that are leaking. In addition, they will be able to provide periodic online dyke monitoring during non-flood times. The development of low-cost equipment suitable to record the measured values is also a component of our project. For the sensors in question, we are using conventional and inexpensive glass fibres as used in telecommunications technology. The deformation of the textile structure is measured, and this corresponds to the deformation of the dyke. The data is to be collected in measuring stations, which could be located at distances of several kilometres from one another. Our system allows determination of both location and depth of deformation.
