Description: Das Projekt "Hydrothermale Bewegung und biologische Produktion in the Agaeis" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Karlsruhe (TH), Institut für Petrographie und Geochemie durchgeführt. Hydrothermal activity in the Aegean has been shown to play a major role in determining biological activity. Recent studies indicate that there is long term periodicity in venting which can be related e.g. to tidal pressure as well as episodic events occur which greatly enhance the nutrient flux into the oligotrophic Aegean Sea. Little is known, however, about the 'normal' periodicity and the role of episodic events. Paliohori Bay in the SE of Milos Island, Greece, has been chosen as an investigation site to measure vent fluxes and to characterize their influence on biological production. The tasks of the IPG Karlsruhe team are: 1. to do long term recording of vent fluid flows, temperature and other physical and chemical parameters; 2. to map and sample hydrothermal plumes and vents within and outside Paliohori Bay as well as to take profiles of the water column at chosen control sites; 3. to characterize the chemical composition of hydrothermal fluids; 4. to establish venting periodicities and related temperature, flux and composition changes; 5. to determine the role of episodic events and their relation to seismicity, tidal pressure, meteoric conditions etc.; 6. to detect variations in nutrient composition in the upper sediment layer due to vent related biological activity.
