Description: There is much evidence to suggest that it is temperature which primarily controls tree growth at the timberline. However other factors such as precipitation/evaporation ratio, wind speed and the accumulation of snow during the winter time all play their role. The measurement of meteorological factors in the close vicinity of the timberline trees is therefore important if the impact of these different factors is to be separated. The project will concentrate on: - the production of a calibration set of climate/environment data and tree growth responses over the last 100 years along a transect across the timberline in Northern Fennoscandia, and on Alpine and Mediterranian Mountains; - the use of data-set to model the effects of climate on timber line forests; - testing the model on past situations of Holocene timberline and climate different from today; - the building of a predictive model of responses of timberline forests to future changing climate.
