Sustainability assessment of the Uranium value added chain with specific focus on Switzerland

Description: Das Projekt "Sustainability assessment of the Uranium value added chain with specific focus on Switzerland" wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Universität Zürich, Geographisches Institut. One of the main challenges in the coming century is how the world-wide increasing energy demand can be supplied. In face of decreasing oil reserves and climate change, the claim for renewable energy carriers, low CO2-emission / unit energy produced technologies as well as the development energy efficient technologies is prominent. Nuclear energy is seen as a promising technology supporting the transition towards a low CO2 emission era. The advocates of nuclear technology praise the relatively low CO2-emissions per unit of energy produced and the high supply security when compared with renewable energy technologies, such as solar and wind. However, through the whole value added chain, nuclear technology poses serious environmental and health risks and the questions of the final storage of nuclear wastes still remains unresolved. This project deals with the question what the role of nuclear energy could be in the transition towards a low CO2 emission era. In doing to it aims at developing an assessment tool which considers (i) the potential risks throughout the whole value added chain; (ii) systemic sustainability criteria including the environmental, economic and social dimension; (iii) a sustainability solution space showing the potential room of action for policymakers and stakeholders; and (iv) a trade-off analysis which allows to mimic priority setting of different stakeholder groups. For doing so this project will adapt and further develop the transdisciplinary sustainability assessment method Sustainability Solution Space for Decision-making (SSP). The SSP is an integrative and transdisciplinary approach integrating environmental process models and decision-making models and has been applied for analyzing the sustainability solution space of the milk value added chain in Switzerland. The project includes the following steps: - Development of an environmental process model depicting the world wide material flows of Uranium flows. A special emphasis will be set on analyzing the geopolitical aspects of the resource reserves. - Development of a system based set of assessment criteria which will include the different steps in the value added chain as well as chain specific indicators. - Analysis of ranges and sustainability thresholds, considering inter- and intragenerational equity. - Elaboration of a sustainability solution space depicting the room for action for stakeholders and providing the basis for a trade-off analysis.
