Description: Mikroorganismen reduzieren und methylieren Elemente der Gruppen VA und VIA (N, P, As, S, Se, Te) zu XHn und X(CH3)n Verbindungen. Verfluechtigungen liessen sich fuer Bioremediation von mit diesen Elementen belasteten Boeden einsetzen, die Gase koennten in der Atmosphaerenchemie wichtig sein.

Title: Microbial volatization of metalloids
Description: Leading Questions: What is the distribution of reduction and volatilization of oxoanions of group Va and VIa among microorganisms? What is the distribution of anaerobic respiration with oxoanions of group Va and VIa among microorganisms? Can microbial volatilization be scaled up for bioremediation? Abstract: The goals of this project are: on the organismic level: the investigation of physiological and ecological aspects of the formation of volatile species by microbes of the elements of group V and VI, such as sulphur, selenium, tellurium, phosphorus and arsenic and the investigation of the microbial diversity able to catalyze these reactions; on the biochemical level: the elucidation of pathways involved in reduction/oxidation and alkylation of these elements, esp. of selenium, with the aid of modern chemical analytical techniques. induction of new proteins ('stress proteins') by oxyanions of the elements mentioned above. Biotechnological aspect: construction of a soil bioreactor for biomediation of soil contaminated with oxyanions of the elements mentioned above.
