Assessing Climate Response Options: Policy Simulations - Insights from using National and international models

Description: This proposal addresses the objectives of the 5FP for Energy and aims at obtaining robust indications, usable by decision-makers, on the impact of policy measures on GHG emissions and on sustainability (through new technology penetration), based on the comparison of a set of models. Questions to be explored are: 1) to what extent technologies can facilitate required GHG emissions reduction in the short and long term; 2) to what extent policies can foster the development of more advanced, climate friendly energy technologies. The work involves the application of a suite of 15 mostly bottom-up, technology rich models, describing country, regional or global energy systems, to simulate policies on the basis of common assumptions and then compare results. The project is articulated in 6 phases: phase 1 to define comparable assumptions for all models; phases 1-5 to run four policy cases; phase 6 to summarise and communicate results and implications to decision makers.
