Condensed tannins as part of an integrated concept to control gastrointestinal parasites in ruminants in organic farming: effects on palatability and nutrient utilisation

Description: Organically managed farms often have problems with parasite control, such as digestive tract nematodes, since effective chemicals with antihelmintic properties must not be used preventively. Gastrointestinal parasitism is mainly a problem in small ruminants and in young cattle during their first grazing season. An intensive literature research indicated a promising strategy based on forages with elevated contents of condensed tannins. However, forages in temperate climates are usually low in tannins and, furthermore, tannins are also antinutritive. In a large project the potential of selection for forages with elevated contents of condensed tannins and their antihelmintic properties shall be tested. The overall project consists of 1) Identification and cultivation of candidate forage species and cultivars (FAL), 2) Parasitological aspects and experiments (FiBL) and 3) Screening of plants containing tannins on their effects of rumen fermentation in vitro, palatability/susceptibility in the animals and nutritional value (in collaboration of ALP and ETH). In Part 3, promising forage species (mostly legumes) will be grown to be used in subsequent experiments including preference studies, digestibility and N balance trials, and efficiency trials. The experiments will take place at the research facilities of ALP. Parts 1, 2 and 3 are combined in a synthesis describing the scientific background of strategies based on forage plants with elevated contents of condensed tannins and developing recommendations to organic farmers.
