Title: Foulprotect - protection from fouling and prevention of bio-corrosion in marine engineering; project: Development and adaptation of coating concepts for protection against fouling and verification of the application properties for the maritime sector
Description: The cooperative research project FoulProtect undertakes the endeavor to develop innovative coatings, which offer a long-lasting fouling prevention and corrosion protection for vessels, and offshore installations. The aim is to develop effective systems, which cope with existing and upcoming legal restrictions for the use of biocidal systems on ship hulls and offshore installations of ocean energy.
Fouling and bio-corrosion are obligate and ubiquitous processes in the water where submerged technical surfaces suffer from. The negative impact for the maritime and offshore industry is due to the increase in weight and friction which endangers the stability and durability of the static installations and increase fuel consumption and emissions of ships. Biocidal products base on continuous leaching process, which are depleted long time before the intended service-life of offshore installations. On ship hulls hard non-abrasive coatings which are smooth and kept foul-free by cleaning are getting increasing interest. Up to now, the market share of biocide-free coatings is below 2% and there exists a strong need to develop better performing systems as actually exist on the market.
Biocorrosion may lead to a premature end of service life of installations and components which are associated with energy losses and out-of service times. The offshore wind energy and the ocean energy industry are facing severely those problems. There is an urgent need to develop innovative prevention systems to improve the duration of their installations and avoid the loss of money. For the shipping industry those surface technologies are of special interest which reduce the friction of ship's hull and help to reduce fuel costs and emissions.
Actually, from basic research a multitude of prospective ideas have been published which include the creation of hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces which mask the substrate and show non-stick properties. They will be applied on smooth and structured surfaces which shall enhance the friction reducing effects. FoulProtect as a highly cooperative project will combine knowledge in fouling prevention and corrosion protection of universities and research institutes for applied science in combination with shipping and offshore industry.
