Title: Large-Scale Polyurethane Recycling
Description: Project Background: In the EU there are over 2.6 million tons of Polyurethane (PU) produced which are - if not recycled - incinerated or dumped after use. By carrying out chemical recycling in large-scale production plants, economic efficiency may be attained and recycled polyol of high quality may be produced at about 40 percent less costs than new material. Chemical recycling truly re-uses the resource polyol, which is used for PU production. Therefore in the long term this is the only recycling technique with the potential to allow feasible recycling for all PU plastics and allow a high content of recycled-material. Chemical recycling currently only takes place at a few, inefficient pilot plants and with techniques only suitable for certain PU types. Capacities are very limited. Project Objectives: The objectives of the project are: Set up of a technical scale plant to demonstrate an economically and ecologically viable recycling system (full cycle, not down cycling) for all polyurethane plastics (PU). Provide a system to be implemented at PU manufacturers of reasonable size to immediately use their PU-scraps to regain the polyol and lead it back into the process. Refine the raw recyclate into ready-to-use material blends to allow other manufacturers without own recycling plant to use the technology too. New techniques allowing recycling of soft and/or semi-hard polyurethane.
