Title: The planning and development of an X-GW factory for the production of advanced photovoltaic products in Germany
Description: German engineering is worldwide known and highly respected. Many companies, especially in the south of Germany are specialized in developing and manufacturing latest state of the art machinery and equipment. The enormous development of the photovoltaic (PV) technology and associated industries was mainly driven by inventions 'Made in Germany'. Newest cell generations, more efficient modules and also high throughput factories equipped with modern production technology led to the current situation in which a massive oversupply is dictating the prices. A general approach, taking not only more efficient cells or increased throughput into consideration, has to be developed to stay competitive within Germany. The whole supply chain has to be investigated, standards have to be defined and benefits due to scale have to be evaluated. The aim of this research activity is to compile a study including all these aspects and giving an outlook on potential strategies for different PV technologies (with a major locus on crystalline substrates) in an X-GW fabrication environment. Based on a general overview and a SWOT -Analysis, current and future cell- and module concepts are evaluated in regard scale and ramp up towards mass manufacturability. Modern, resource efficient production with a high but suitable degree of automation are in locus of this. The optimization of the complete fabrication life cycle, starting from planning over ramp-up, constant optimization during operation till the definition of potential extensions or recycling have to be considered right from the beginning. That's why all these aspects will be reflected in the study to build new concepts based on a wide and profound basis. Reduction of CAPEX and OPEX is of upmost priority. The study will not only report on technological concept but also on the impact on society, namely the companies involved along the whole supply chain and the related effects on employments and consequently the job market. A well planned and structured concept of an X-GW PV fabrication will therewith be the blueprint for a successful continuation of PV within Germany.
