Description: Das Projekt "B (SAME) Saving Mount Everest" wird/wurde gefördert durch: Öko Himal Gesellschaft für Zusammenarbeit Alpen-Himalaya. Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Technische Universität Wien, Institut für Wassergüte, Ressourcenmanagement und Abfallwirtschaft (E226).In the last decades the Sagarmatha region became an important and well known trekking region. Over 30.000 trekkers and mountaineers supported by 150.000 sherpa are trekking each year via Lukla and Namche Bazaar to the Mount Everest base camp. This kind of tourism is one of the most important economic factors for this region and therefore very important to those who are living there. Unfortunately, the large number of trekkers and mountaineer is also associated with negative impacts such as continuously increasing amounts of solid waste in the region. On the one hand part of this waste is collected along the trekking route in the lodges and in the base camp, on the other hand a reasonable share of waste is also littered along the trekking routes and on the slopes of the Mount Everest. So far no waste management plan exists for the region and therefore environmental pressure regarding proper waste management is increasing. In the frame of the 'Visit Nepal Year 2011' the Austrian-Nepalese NGO EcoHimal Austria/Nepal organizes together with international partners under the umbrella of the project 'Saving Mount Everest' (SaME) a 'Everest Clean Up' campaign in the Sagarmatha National Park in order to collect waste along the trekking routes an especially on the slopes of Mount Everest between the base camp and the summit. Subsequently a sustainable waste management system should be developed and implemented.
