Quaternary marine ecosystem response to fertilization: Mediterranean sapropel events and implications for marine carbon uptake (MERF)

Description: Das Projekt "Quaternary marine ecosystem response to fertilization: Mediterranean sapropel events and implications for marine carbon uptake (MERF)" wird/wurde gefördert durch: Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Universität Hamburg, Zentrum für Meeres- und Klimaforschung, Fachbereich Geowissenschaften, Institut für Biogeochemie und Meereschemie.A main aim of this research project is to reconstruct productivity cycles in the Mediterranean during the last 200 ky and to understand the mechanisms of ecological change and propagation of nutrients through the System. Our approach includes a suite of new proxy indicators derived largely from inorganic chemistry of primary producing coccolithophorids (dominant calcareous phytoplankton group in the Mediterranean Sea), delta 15N and delta 13C of organic compounds, and C:P ratios in Sediments. A main focus of the research strategy is the calibration of the influence of major nutrients on coccolithophorid production and carbonate chemical signatures in culture experiments and sediment trap samples. The culture experiments will be carried out by WP6 and the sediment trap samples will be provided by WPS and associated research groups (Crete and Milan). The validation of the proxies in surface Sediments (mainly provided by WPs 2, 5 and associated research groups) will be performed to monitor changes in the hydrography of the upper water, and changes in the carbonate flux. Finally, the proxies will be applied to reconstruct primarily the gradients in biological productivity. This is expected if nutrients entered the Mediterranean Sea from distinct sources such as rivers, and secondarily variations in the productivity of species in different ecological niches throughout the water column. Our original research project included 6 WPs and two associated research working groups from Greece and Italy. Because the Spanish Funding Agency will not provide funding for WPs3 and 4 we propose that other WPs in the proposal will partially or totally step in and cover the work of WPs 3 and 4 as described in the original project.
