Title: Investigation of water conditions and water movement in intact and damaged trees using tritium
Description: Objective: The goal of this project is to assess the water conditions and water movement in damaged trees in comparison to undamaged trees. General information: a systematic long-term study of the behaviour of tritium in a beech tree (fagus sylvatica) in the Karlsruhe nuclear research Center (KFK) has resulted in a great deal of experience in the quantitative description of the water supply and its modelling, including the water uptake by the aerial organs of that tree. At locations in the surroundings of the KFK, where damaged trees are present, water supply, water conditions, and water movement shall be studied systematically at selected trees. Tritiated water shall be applicated under different climatic conditions to the soil by irrigation and by introducing it through pipes into different depth of the rooted soil. Furthermore injections into different parts of the base of damaged trees shall be carried out. Subsequent measurements of the tritium concentrations in the transpired water, the leaf water, the water in wood samples, and in the organic matter shall give more insight into the irregularities in the water conditions and water movement of damaged trees in comparison to undamaged trees.
