ICOS-CH: Integrated Carbon Observation System in Switzerland

Description: Das Projekt "ICOS-CH: Integrated Carbon Observation System in Switzerland" wird/wurde gefördert durch: Schweizerischer Nationalfonds zur Förderung der Wissenschaftlichen Forschung. Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich, Institut für Agrarwissenschaften, Departement Biologie. The present proposal ICOS-CH contributes to the Integrated Carbon Observation System Research Infrastructure (ICOS RI) which will enter its operational phase in 2013 (as Integrated Carbon Observation System European Research Infrastructure Consortium, ICOS ERIC). The overarching goals of ICOS RI are to quantify and to understand the greenhouse gas (GHG) balance of the European continent and adjacent regions based on standardized measurements (i.e., sensors and protocols) in the atmosphere, in terrestrial ecosystems and in the ocean, and to distribute data and data products to stakeholders and user communities. National consortia participate in ICOS RI either as members (i.e., EU member states) or observers (i.e., Norway, Switzerland). Switzerland will participate in ICOS RI (see BFI-Botschaft 2013-2016) via the ICOS-CH consortia. Two 1st level sites will provide data and information to Swiss as well as European stakeholders: one ecosystem site (Davos, DAV) and one atmospheric site (Jungfraujoch, JFJ). Both sites have been operated successfully since many years and are internationally highly recognized. Nevertheless, the site set-ups (including equipment, sensors, data acquisition, calibration procedures, etc.) are not yet in accordance with ICOS-RI standards which have been defined with Swiss participation by two working groups within ICOS over the last years. Thus, both sites need installations to comply with ICOS RI requirements as well as person-power to maintain and run the sites (Sub-projects B and C for DAV and JFJ, respectively). Furthermore, the Swiss contribution to ICOS RI needs to be coordinated and membership and station fees need to be paid (Sub-project A). The current proposal covers these costs for the first two years of ICOS RI, i.e., 2013 to 2014.
