The Fate of Volatile Fluorinated Compounds in the Subsurface

Description: The goals of this new research project are to improve the understanding of the fate of selected volatile fluorinated compounds in sites such as landfills, contaminated soils and aquifers. The work will focus on selected chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs, also known under their brand names freon, frigen, ...), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and some related compounds. The project includes field as well as laboratory investigations on volatilization, panitioning, and transformations by biotic and abiotic processes. The results are important to 1) assess the emissions of volatile organic compounds from contaminated sites, 2) improve risk analysis and remediation techniques, and 3) use fluorinated compounds as tools for site investigation.
