Microbial diversity in salt-affected soils: Can soil functions recover to promote the growth of plants by injections of bacteria?

Description: Das Projekt "Microbial diversity in salt-affected soils: Can soil functions recover to promote the growth of plants by injections of bacteria?" wird/wurde gefördert durch: Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung. Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institut Bundesforschungsinstitut für Ländliche Räume, Wald und Fischerei - Institut für Biodiversität.Irrigation-based agriculture is an important means to provide food to a steadily growing human world population. In semiarid ecosystems, however, irrigation combined with fertilization often results in soil salinization which negatively affects crop production. Salinization has direct negative effects by reducing crop yield and quality and indirect, by destroying the soil organic matter and structure. As a consequence, soils lose their water-holding capacity, the microbial community as a basis for biogeochemical cycling is affected, erosion begins and eventually land is lost and cannot be converted back to natural ecosystems. Because of the advantages of irrigation-based land management, practices must be further developed to allow sustainable crop production. The objective of this bilateral, Mexican-German collaboration is to combine expertise from soil microbiology, biotechnology and plant diagnostics in order to contribute to analyze which soil microorganisms are most affected by salinization and to investigate whether plant growth promoting bacteria can be restored in damaged soils.
