Description: Das Projekt "Organic farming with Trees" wird/wurde gefördert durch: Bundesministerium für Finanzen Österreich. Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Universität für Bodenkultur Wien, Institut für Ökologischen Landbau.Organic farming and trees is to investigate the potential of strategic ecological farming practices (Organic farming, Agroforestry and Forestry), stabilizing the East Mau water catchment, with an ultimate goal of improving livelihoods, promoting sustainable use of resources, providing self-sufficiency and market surplus of catchment products as well as conserving the environment. The study site is a very important catchment area as is the origin of key rivers in Kenya. The catchment has been experiencing intense deforestation and haphazard human settlement in the recent past, which has resulted into inappropriate farming systems. The site covers about 600 km2 stretching from the top of the hills, through newly deforested areas to old human settlement zones. Egerton University is situated within East Mau catchment. The project is managed by BOKU and ICRAF. Egerton University will be linked into this project. The project is focussing on three themes: - The farming systems (phD Eric Kiprotich Bett) theme will evaluate the potentials of sustainable land use as well as model the whole catchment. Re-establish organic farming practises, include production component facing environmental problems, ICRAF to link in with genetically selected nursery material. - The marketing theme (phD Alfred Mosonik) will develop a model for linking organic key catchment products to the market. Part of this theme is an analysis of the national demand on organic products. - The social systems (phD Hadija Matuli Murenga) theme will investigate farmers perception and attitudes, decision making in small holder timber farming and woody plant resources in rural land use, motivation and acceptance for organic initiatives, characterize information systems, linking local knowledge and decision making.
