Monitoring and Modelling of Glacier and Permafrost Related Hazards in High Mountains

Description: The project aims at developing remote sensing techniques for early recognition of glacial and periglacial hazards based on satellite imagery, aerial photography and digital terrain models. GIS-based modelling will help to determine regional glacier hazard potentials (ice avalanches, lake outbursts, debris flows) at high altitudes and, thereby, apply important findings of the NRP31. Determination of the principal zones of glacier hazard potentials on the basis of empirical rules (critical slope for glacier instability, run-out distance of ice avalanches and debris flows, occurrence of periglacial lakes) will be a product of the research project. A further product will consist in a documentation about historical glacier catastrophes in the Swiss Alps.
