Effect of the diet on enteric methane emissions of ruminants and the corresponding emissions from their manure during storage

Description: Das Projekt "Effect of the diet on enteric methane emissions of ruminants and the corresponding emissions from their manure during storage" wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich, Institut für Nutztierwissenschaften, Professur Tierernährung.Methane has been identified as an important greenhouse gas which has significantly increased in the atmosphere during the last century. In cattle husbandry, the proportion of total methane coming from manure storage is estimated to range around 14 percent. Recently evidence was provided that this proportion can considerably vary and is influenced by the diet of the animals. In particular, the long-term pattern of methane release form stored manure may differ. Based on these considerations, the objectives of the present project are (i) to measure the level of methane emission from rumen fluid and ruminants using diets distinctly differing in composition; (ii) to measure the corresponding methane release from manure when these diets are fed; (iii) to develop a model for overall methane emission based on diet and storage duration. This is a joint project together with the Animal Production group of The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University Copenhagen. A major part of the project will be carried out at the ETH research station Chamau employing dairy cows and respiratory chambers.
