International Collaboration in Chemistry: Development and application of a tuneable diode laser spectrometer for water isotope measurement and scientific studies during cloud simulation experiments in the AIDA chamber

Description: We propose a series of experiments in a cloud simulation chamber to investigate the inhibition of ice growth in cold cirrus clouds using the isotopic fractionation of water molecules during ice condensation as a novel tracer of microphysical processes. The development of the water isotope spectrometer and its application to investigate the inhibition of ice growth in simulated cirrus clouds is designed as a collaborative project between three experienced partners: PCI (Expertise: Laser/Molecular spectroscopy + TDL Sensors), Univ. Chicago (Atmospheric science and isotope research using airborne sensors) and KIT (Cloud experiments using the AIDA simulation chamber).
