Description: During the past few decades, the rapid development of industrial activities has resulted in the introduction of enormous quantities of man-made organics into the biosphere. Some compounds, particularly halogenated ones are toxic and accumulated in the environment. Many soil bacteria, particularly those of the genus Pseudomonas, are able to catabolise a wide range of natural and synthetic organic materials. We are studying the catabolism of aromatic compounds by Pseudomonas bacteria and trying to improve their catabolic ability by means of genetic engineering.
