Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, Institut für Technische Thermodynamik, Abteilung Systemanalyse und Technikbewertung.The department for Systems Analysis and Technology Assessment at DLR, in cooperation with its partners ECA, 3E und dem DFD, works on a strategy for the integration and development of renewables within the project 'Renewable Energy Strategy for Botswana'. One goal of the project is to show paths on how to make use of the great potential of renewables available in Botswana in the most efficient way and to derive possibilities on how this transformation may be conducted. Besides the estimation of the national potential for biomass, wind energy and biofuels, the focus of the project is centered on a satellite-based solar resource assessment - a field of great experience at the department for Systems Analysis and Technology Assessment. Resource maps of direct normal irradiance as well as maps of global horizontal irradiance will be created to determine the potentials of power generation by solar-thermal plants or photovoltaics in the country. Beyond this, hourly time series will be processed for certain coordinates to analyze the potential of electricity generation of different technologies in detail. Based on these potentials the Renewable Energy Mix - Capacity Expansion Model (REMix-CEM) will be used to develop a cost-effective expansion plan for renewable energies and for conventional power plants for the energy sector up to the year 2030. The focus of this DLR-developed optimization model is set on the influence of fluctuating renewables as well as conventional technologies, to guarantee a balanced development and service security. The results may be used as a foundation for the elaboration of an investment strategy for renewables in Botswana.
