Clusters of Excellence 80 (EXC): The Future Ocean, Sea Floor Warming - Ecophysiological consequences of ocean warming and acidification

Description: We propose to investigate the oxygen consumption of cold-water coral stocks (Lophelia pertusa) in laboratory experiments in relation to varying temperature and pH. With these measurements we will address the issues (i) how benthic organisms respond in terms of their metabolic performance to changes in temperature and pH, and (ii) whether there are synergistic effects of temperature and pH on metabolic rates of benthic organisms. Even more important within the 'Future Ocean' context, there are no data available yet about possible synergistic metabolic effects of increased temperature and decreased pH. As just this combination of changes is very likely to happen within the coming decades, studies to produce such data are being highly recommended.
