Title: Assessment and Literature Survey of Methods Active Restauration of the Stratospheric Ozone Layer
Description: Proposals for restauration of the stratospheric ozone layer by active methods appear regularly in the literature. These proposals either aim at a destruction of those substances which contain chlorine or at a production of additional ozone within the stratosphere. All these 'geo-engineering' measures, however, are associated with adverse atmospheric effects which have to be thoroughly evaluated. Evaluation and feasibility assessment of literature proposals with regards to general atmospheric impact, therefore, is the subject present project. In addition to the above task of reviewing and assessing the literature proposals we will also perform a series of independent modelling studies. The aim of these studies will be in particular to assess active methods of the restauration of the ozone layer by photochemical techniques (i.e. laser irradiation from space). It will include photochemical box models as well as box trajectory models. Support for this project will be provided by the Meteorological Institute of the Free University of Berlin and the DASA space research group in Bremen.
