Description: Das Projekt "Raeumliche Mittel von turbulenten Fluessen ueber inhomogenem Gebiet" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich, Geographisches Institut durchgeführt. The objective of this project is to devise a method to obtain effective spatial averages of vertical turbulent exchange (fluxes) of heat and momentum above an inhomogeneous surface. Knowledge of such average fluxes is necessary in the formulation of the lower boundary conditions of atmospheric flow models (eg for air pollution, mesoscale circulation, weather forecast and climate). Due to the interaction between the dynamics of the flow and the variability of surface fluxes, the effective spatial averages may differ considerably from straightforward statistical averages. In order to reduce the ensuing errors in the model results the effect of this interaction needs to be parameterized, since it cannot be evaluated directly by the model. The method of parameterization proposed in this project is based on geometrical-textural characteristics of the inhomogeneous surface, fundamentals of boundary layer diffusion theory and the results of high resolution numerical models. The inclusion of surface textural information into the parameterization scheme forms an original contribution of the present project. The method is tested with field data obtained during the third POLLUMET intensive operation period, in summer 1993.
