Development of glacial/geological hazard response strategies for developing countries in the High Himalayas

Description: In the past decades, the high-mountain areas of the Himalayan countries (India, Nepal, Bhutan) have been undergoing dramatic developments: (1) intensified impact from rural and urban settlements in the deeply incised valleys with considerable change in land-use, and (2), threat from dramatically retreating glaciers. Based on the expertise on changing hazard scenarios in the Alps, the present and future glacier dynamics in the High Himalayas are defined and triggering mechanisms and hazards dynamics are assessed by modern methods. Investigation of known sites will serve for the validation of new assessment technologies. These activities will lead to guidelines/tools for the development of regional/national hazard mitigation strategies. Further on a genuine decision support system will facilitate appropriate action by policy makers and planners.
