Europaeische stratosphaerische Monitoringstationen in den Alpen II (ESMOS/ALPS II)

Description: Das Projekt "Europaeische stratosphaerische Monitoringstationen in den Alpen II (ESMOS/ALPS II)" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Angewandten Forschung, Fraunhofer-Institut für Atmosphärische Umweltforschung durchgeführt. This project is based on the integrated use of reliable time series of ground-based observations over periods starting in the mid-eighties or since the early nineties, and on validated satelite observations covering the same period (e.g. SAGE II) or shorter period (e.g. UARS). These data sets will be combined with new multi-dimensional modelling developments to validate their results with respect to stratospheric perturbations and to study the chemicaldynamical-radiative coupled processes of the mid-latitude stratosphere, with the emphasis on the heterogeneous processes. The main objectives of this project will be: - to expand the intensive co-ordinated ground-based observations to provide climatological measurements of ozone total amounts and vcrtical profiles, aerosol vertical distributions, CIO vertical profiles, NO2, NO, reservoirs and long-lived tracers total amounts; - to study the coherence of the ozone vertical profiles database recorded since the mideighties The problem of the possible meteorological bias in the ozone profile retrieved from lidars in the low stratosphere will be addressed; - to identify the processes which drive the variability of ozone over the Alps in the low and middle stratosphere by coupling the ozone vertical profiles obtained at different sites (OHP, L'Aquila, Hohenpeissenberg, Bordeaux, Bern) and using dynamical tracers (trajectories, potential temperatures and vorticities); - to study the nitrogen and chlorine budgets with ground-based and satellit measurements to test and validate the stratospheric models; - to assess the impact of heterogeneous chemistry processes on the partitioning of stratospheric species by using ground-based and satellite data combined with 2-D and 3-D modelting studies; - to compare the time series of stratospheric species now available from the Alpine stations with long-term model simulation over the last decade; - to contribute to stratospheric studies on the connections of mid-latitudes changes with high and low latitudes; - to validate satellite measurements of stratospheric species performed by GOME and possibly ADEOS; - to finalise intercomparison for aerosol and CIO retrieval methods.
