SAR-Dateninterpretation in bergigem Gelaende fuer geooekologische Anwendungen

Description: Das Projekt "SAR-Dateninterpretation in bergigem Gelaende fuer geooekologische Anwendungen" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Zürich, Geographisches Institut durchgeführt. A method is developed for the applications of ERS-1 SAR images for snowcover determination in high mountain areas. It is based on a radiometric correction to remove the relief induced distortions, and by generating a new synthetic image, using the optimal resolution approach (ORA). The resulting image contains the fully interpretable parts of two crossing orbits. A comparison of SAR derived snow signatures with optical imagery and with ground truth information led to the conclusion, that a coarse snowcover discrimination can be made by taking several limitations into account, namely: a)no discrimination is possible between wt soil and wet snow and b) the detection of snow can be carried out only in wide open areas. In addition, due to rugged terrain, layover effects require images from at least two crossing orbits. The low local spatial resolution in sloped areas also limits the accuracy of the snowcover discrimination. Leading Questions: Systematic improvement of the methodology to interpret SAR-satellite data for geoecological applications in high mountain areas.
