SILVICS - Silvicultural Systems for Sustainable Forest Resources Management INTAS EU-funded project, May 2002-April 2005

Description: Das Projekt "SILVICS - Silvicultural Systems for Sustainable Forest Resources Management INTAS EU-funded project, May 2002-April 2005" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Fraunhofer-Institut Autonome Intelligente Systeme durchgeführt. Sustainable forest resource management in conditions of transition, either invoked by environmental or by socio-economic changes, needs to adjust to new circumstances by developing adaptive silvicultural strategies that account at the same time for the changing role of forests and forestry, and for global environmental change.Process-based models of forest growth and forest ecosystem dynamics have been developed both by Russian scientists and by research groups in Western Europe the past decades. These models can now be used to explore the consequences of different silvicultural strategies, accounting for e.g. carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and transformation of plantation forests in mixed, uneven-aged stands. The purpose of this project is the application of existing models to define and asses optimal silvicultural systems, aiming at sustainable forest resource development and use. The optimal silvicultural strategies to be defined using the models, will be of use to forest managers and forest policy makers in the decision-making process concerning sustainable forest use. These user-groups will be directly informed e.g. through the projects leaflet and these Internet sites.
