Title: Research group FOR 2401: Optimization-Based Multiscale Control of Low-Temperature Combustion Engines; Sub project: Numerical methods for optimization based control of cyclic processes
Description: The global goal of the research group is the development of optimization based controllers for low temperature combustion engines. The investigated application is a fast, cyclic, and nonlinear process. In TP2, fundamental numerical methods for fast, cyclic, and nonlinear processes are developed that allow the efficient formulation and numerical solution of the arising optimization problems in real-time. To achieve this, it is pursued to combine the process of iterative learning control (ILC) and nonlinear model based predictive control (NMPC). The result is a real-time iterations scheme for iterative learning NMPC. The result is a real-time-iteration scheme for iterative learning NMPC (IL-NMPC) that uses a moving horizon estimator (MHE) for state and parameter estimation. To tackle the challenge of real-time capability for fast, cyclic processes, the arising structures in the optimization problem shall be used specifically in the numerics. This not only concerns the exploitation of periodicity of the MHE and NMPC optimization problems in the linear algebra formulations but also the development of new implicit integration schemes that build a link between the necessary calculation of derivatives and the IL-NMPC iterations. At first, the IL-NMPC operates on a cycle-to-cycle based mode with a sampling rate of 10-60 ms, which is also the cycle time of the process. A crucial factor is that the time delay introduced by the controller has to be shorter than the cycle time. This can be realized by a real-time iteration scheme that separates the feedback step into a preparation phase and a feedback phase. In a second step, the IL-NMPC shall be extended such that feedback can be executed on different time scales. This means that the original IL-NMPC, which acts on a cycle-to-cycle basis, is extended such that it can also produce feedback action during the cycle. To enable the multi-scale capability, concepts with different complexity levels are investigated. The developments go to the level of tailor-made algorithms for multi-level real-time iterations schemes that allow for control applications in the kHz-range. The numerical methods are going to be optimized for the combustion engine application, but are also applicable for other cyclic processes. Thus, the numerical methods shall be made public in type of a tool for automatic code generation.
