EPD: The European Pollen Database: A Tool for Paleoenvironment and Palaeoclimate Reconstructions at a Continental Scale

Description: Objective: To standardize and archive palynological data, including detailed information on the specific sites, for exploitation with modern computing techniques, and to promote the use of pollen data for climate research. General Information: For several decennia palynologists have established numerous pollen sequences, which have enabled reconstructions throughout Europe of the Younger Pleistocene and Holocene vegetation and climate history. The European Pollen Database is standardizing, archiving, and distributing these data in a form suitable for modern computer based analysis. The three contractors constitute the Executive Committee for the management of the database. In addition the management structure includes an Advisory Board of 10 members representing the major European regions. The palynological network at the base of the EPD consists of researchers from 25 countries. The EPD was established in previous EU research programmes, but the present project is different in that the EPD has been given an independence from specific application projects. This independence has appeared desirable in order to help increase the number of contributions and contributors and the free access of users. More than 500 sites have been compiled so far, and it is intended to double this number within the next two years. The EPD organizes meetings and training courses in order to promote contributions. The management and utilization rules have been defined by a protocol. A newsletter is published every year. Within EPD specialised software is being developed to facilitate the use of the data and the access of users. EPD represents a tool for EU climate research through the establishment of palaeobiome reconstructions for the validation of climate models. The EPD is the natural depository for all newly acquired palynological data within EU funded projects.
