Description: The influence of elevated CO2 on growth and development of forest tree seedlings is studied in situ in a mixed forest near Basel by using open top chambers. Plots are arranged across a light gradient so that CO2 and light interactions can be studied. Seedlings share soil space and soil resources with adult, canopy trees. We use three CO2 concentrations and higher 5 species to cover nonlinearity of response and biodiversity. Leading Questions: - Are forest trees carbon limited: Today-in the future? - What controls the alpine treeline?
