Description: The major goal of this project is to increase our basic understanding of the abiotic and microbial processes that are responsible for the reduction of organic pollutants in the environment, particularly, in anaerobic soils and sediments. The focus is on the reduction of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) and on reductive dehalogenation reactions. In laboratory batch and column experiments, the kinetics of the reduction of series of structurally related model compounds are investigated in homogeneous and heterogeneous aqueous systems containing either well defined model reductants (eg hydroquinones, Fe2+ adsorbed to various iron oxides, bacterial transition-metal coenzymes), liquid cultures of anaerobic microorganisms, or anaerobic sediment and aquifer materials. Presently, a major effort is undertaken to develop concepts for quantification of NAC reduction and reductive dehalogenation of polyhalogenated methanes and ethanes in iron reducing environments.
