Description: Carnivorous plants have evolved in environments where light and water are abundant, but soil-macro-nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are severely limiting. As a consequence, nutrient levels in carnivorous plants are low and, despite their herbaceous habit, carnivorous plants are more similar to evergreen shrubs and tree with respect to their leaf nutrient contents. A meta analysis of studies that tested if carnivory improved the growth of carnivorous plants indicates a significant positive effect of prey addition on plant growth, but also showed that the additional nutrient gain from carnivory is less valuable in a relatively nutrient-rich environment. This observation resembles the interaction of atmospheric and pedospheric nitrogen sources in conifer seedlings and suggests a regulatory interaction between above- and below-ground nitrogen sources of carnivorous plants.
