Description: Das Projekt "Ecoprofit Graz - die Bestrebungen des Stadtrates im Vergleich zu den Beduerfnissen der Industrie" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Trier, European Association for Environmental Management Education - Focal Point Trier -, Europäisches Diplom in Umweltwissenschaften durchgeführt. The Ecoprofit approach developed by the City Council of Graz/Austria and the Technical University of Graz is designed to increase the environmental performance and strengthen the economic Situation of small and medium sized enterprises (SME). The approach is based on the PREPARE-documents, the Dutch PRISMA-project for Pollution Prevention as well as elements of environmental management systems. During the last four years Ecoprofit has been applied to 56 enterprises in Graz and their comments have been taken into account. Now the City Council wants to continue environmental improvement in SME on a broader base keeping the decision of attendance voluntarily. The purpose of this study is to investigate the reasons why the other 550 enterprises do not yet participate in the programme. To this end the characteristics of the programme, the structure of the local economy and their environmental impacts are examined carefully. From this, seven hypotheses for possible reasons of abstention are set up and tested in a series of interviews with representatives of 10 relevant companies. The result is a set of recommendations for the City Council.
