Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: RWTH Aachen University, Institut für Umweltforschung, Lehr- und Forschungsgebiet Ökosystemanalyse (ESA).Lake Shkodra is located in the border area of Montenegro and Albania. It is not only an important habitat for numerous plant and animal species but also the biggest freshwater reservoir in the region and therefore an important natural resource. Water of the lake and water of springs, which are hydrologically linked with the lake, is utilized for drinking water supply and irrigation in agriculture. The lake also plays an important role as fishing area and, to an increasing degree, for bathing, water sports and tourism. Thus, the ecological status of the lake is of great importance for the population. Already since 2002, the project 'EULIMNOS (funded by the German Rectors' Conference HRK in the framework of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe) acquires ecological and ecotoxicological data concerning the lake. As an additional contribution to the projected comprehensive insight of the lake's status, within this See-ERA.NET project the contamination of lake sediments by teratogenic, endocrine-active and dioxin-like pollutants has now been determined by means of bioanalytical tools and chemical analysis. Existing pollution hotspots and potential pollution sources were identified. The figure below shows an overview of the conducted work.
