Handel, Gesellschaften und Nachhaltige Entwicklung (SUSTRA)

Description: Ecologic ist ein Partner im SUSTRA Netzwerk, welches aus 11 europäischen Forschungsinstituten besteht und dessen Ziel es ist, die Beziehungen zwischen internationalem Handel, Umweltschutz und Nachhaltiger Entwicklung zu untersuchen. Dabei stehen die Beziehung von multilateralen Umweltverträgen und internationalem Handelsrecht, Umweltverträglichkeitsprüfung von Handelsabkommen, Technologietransfer und die Kennzeichnung von Gütern im Vordergrund. Diese Fragestellungen werden in einer Serie von Workshops analysiert. Ziel ist es, gemeinsame Positionen der Mitgliedsstaaten zu erarbeiten und bestehende Forschungsdefizite zu identifizieren. Die Ergebnisse der Workshops werden publiziert.

  Description: The SUSTRA network deals with a variety of policy questions surrounding international trade and the environment. As a partner in this network of 11 European research institutions, Ecologic is examining the nexus between economic globalisation, international trade, the environment and the EU as political actor. Concern about the social and ecological impacts of trade agreements and the refusal of high social and environmental standards due to their anticipated protectionist effects has led to increasing mistrust among EU citizens. This has created a difficult setting for the furthering of sustainable trade policy. The aim of this project is to deepen knowledge about sustainable trade policy and to develop policy recommendations for both trade and environmental policy-makers.
