Aim of this work package was to clarify the main lethal effect of kiln drying process against bark and wood boring insects. For the investigation infested logs of Norway spruce (Picea abies) and Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) between 25-30 cm of diameter and about 120 cm of length were used. The test were carried out in a modern drying chamber of Kompetenzzentrums Holz directed by Christian Hansmann & Hermann Pleschberger. The results of the experimental Kiln drying process showed very impressively, that the heating of the wood inside the chamber to an amount of more than 56 C has to be guaranteed in order to carry out a successful control of wood boring insects. Already a small undercut of the critical temperature makes a survival of larvae possible, even if the heating runs longer than 30 minutes. The results of the various tests demonstrated without any doubt, the minimum requirements for KD Processes to control all investigated categories of wood boring insects. Tested organism were Cerambycid of the genus Monochamus, Tetropium, Rhagium. Semanotus und Arhopalus and wood wasps and parasiting Ichneumonidae.
