Description: Das Projekt "Investigation of aerosol hygroscopicity and its influence on clouds with respect to Arctic versus continental air masses" wird/wurde gefördert durch: Schweizerischer Nationalfonds zur Förderung der Wissenschaftlichen Forschung. Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Stockholm University, Department of Applied Environmental Science.Atmospheric aerosols are solid or liquid particles suspended in the air. They have an immense impact on our health but also on our global climate. Within the proposed Postdoc project, aerosol properties will be studied at a site in northern Sweden. In particular, the aerosol hygroscopicity will be analyzed using in-situ measurements that will be linked to measured cloud properties and additional aerosol optical and microphysical measurements. These measurements will be used for model calculations and comparisons, which are important tasks to improve global climate models that are finally needed to understand climate change. A focus will also be set on the Arctic because the polar regions are especially susceptible to climate change. The proposed site offers the unique chance to study the transport and changes of aerosol properties to the Arctic. For this, continuous measurements from Ny-Alesund (Spitsbergen) as well as trajectory analysis will be used. Finally, the results will be compared to the treatment of the direct and indirect aerosol forcing in current global climate and chemical transport models, and recommendations for model improvements will be provided to the large-scale modeling community.
