Several bleaching herbicides are investigated that make plant leaves susceptible to photooxidative damage. In the present phase the project centers on the investigation of the mode of photoinactivation of catalase in leaves. As a wide-spread phenomenon catalase is inactivated in leaves under high light intensities. This light inactivation is due to photooxidative events originating from excess light energy in the chloroplasts. Under normal physiological conditions the loss of catalase appears to be continuously replaced by new synthesis. When light stress is to high or synthesis impaired, catalase activity declines strikingly and thereby conceivably allows photooxidative damage to increase. Photoinactovation of catalase is an indicator of light steess and possibly also causally involves in the progress of photooxidative damage.
