Schwerpunktprogramm (SPP) 1006: Bereich Infrastruktur - Internationales Kontinentales Bohrprogramm, Teilprojekt: Zeitnahe Probennahme von Spherule-Lagen in der 2011 ICDP Bohrung Barberton Mountain Land: Archiv von Meteoriteneinschlägen auf der frühen Erde

Description: Wir beantragen finanzielle Unterstützung für die Teilnahme am Treffen zur Beprobung der ICDP Bohrung 'Barberton Mountain Land'. Die Bohrkerne werden voraussichtlich in der zweiten Hälfte des Jahres 2012 in Johannisburg, Süd Afrika ausgelegt. Dies ist die beste Gelegenheit für eine Kernbeschreibung und Entnahme ausgewählter Proben. Dünnschliffherstellung und vorläufige petrographische und geochemische Beschreibung sind geplant als Vorarbeiten zu einem DFG Antrag im regulären Antragszeitraum des ICDP Schwerpunktprogramms im Herbst 2012. Der anschließende Projektantrag behandelt die Untersuchung der spät Archaischen Spherule Lagen, die ältesten bekannten Überlieferungen von Meteoriteneinschlägen auf der Erde. Millimetergroße Spherulen sind größer und bilden massigere Schichten als alle bekannten Auswurfslagen phanerozoischer Impaktereignisse, inklusive der globalen Auswurfsschicht des Chicxulub Impakt-Ereignisses, der das mesozoische Erdzeitalter beendete.

  Description: We ask for financial support to attend the sampling party of the 2011-2012 ICDP drilling 'Barberton Mountain Land'. The sampling party in Johannesburg, South Africa, expected to be scheduled for the second half of 2012, provides the best opportunity for detailed core logging, sample selection and acquisition. Thin sectioning and initial petrographic and geochemical description is planed as work in preparation for a full proposal to be submitted to the next ICDP call in fall 2012. In the follow up proposal the impact and meteorite research team at the Museum für Naturkunde aims to investigate the late Archean spherule layers, the oldest record of impact events on Earth.
