Bioclimatic conditions and air pollution related to human health (Cardiovascular and respiratory diseases) in Heraklio, Crete

Description: Das Projekt "Bioclimatic conditions and air pollution related to human health (Cardiovascular and respiratory diseases) in Heraklio, Crete" wird/wurde gefördert durch: Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst. Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Universität Freiburg, Meteorologisches Institut, Professur für Meteorologie und Klimatologie. The objective of the research program is to examine the impacts of bioclimatic conditions and air pollution in cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, in Crete. The island of Crete is a suitable region focused on, since air pollution (mainly particulate matter from Saharan dust episodes) is apparent in the larger cities (pilot study in Heraklio city) and the geomorphology of the island is responsible for the emergence of extreme weather conditions. The Cretan mountains are orientated perpendicularly to the southern air mass flow, generating the so-called Föhn winds. Coming down from the lee of the mountains, these dry, hot winds can have an abrupt effect on prevailing bioclimatic conditions, which are represented by thermal bioclimatic indices, such as among others the Physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET) based on the energy balance models of the human body. The thermal index PET can use hourly values of air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and total solar radiation, and represents in a very good degree the bioclimatic regime of a region. The estimation of PET is succeeded by the application of a specific program (RayMan), developed and continuously improved by a research team in the Meteorological Institute of the University of Freiburg, Germany and is used widely for the assessment of the thermal environment. The collaboration with the German researchers will result in transferring the expertise knowledge regarding the thermal indices in an urban environment, such as the city of Heraklio, Crete, which very frequently faces extreme bioclimatic conditions combined with intense air pollution episodes (Saharan dust) affecting the human health.
