Strategies for Adapting to Climate Change in Rural Sub-Saharan Africa - Targeting the Most Vulnerable (GTZ-IFPRI )

Description: Das Projekt "Strategies for Adapting to Climate Change in Rural Sub-Saharan Africa - Targeting the Most Vulnerable (GTZ-IFPRI )" wird/wurde gefördert durch: Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung / International Food Policy Research Institute. Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Leibniz-Zentrum für Agrarlandschaftsforschung (ZALF) e.V., Institut für Sozioökonomie.Climate change will have a significant impact on the livelihoods and living conditions of the poor in developing countries. Long-term changes in climate will disproportionately affect regions in both the semi-arid and arid parts of the globe and the more humid tropics. Within these areas, the effects of climate change vary across regions, farming and food systems, households, and individuals. The project aims to reduce vulnerability of rural households to climate change through better-coordinated and targeted food system adaptation strategies. The purpose of the project is to provide regional organizations, policymakers and farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa with tools to identify and implement appropriate adaptation strategies. An analysis of biophysical and socio-economic factors determining exposure and adaptive capacity and adaptation to climate change are urgently needed to make more effective and informed policy decisions. Adaptation strategies resulting from impact modelling will be provided within the project but, in addition, the acceptance of recommended strategies is crucial towards a real added value for marginalised people to stabilise their livelihoods. In this regard ZALF aims to (1) analyse the acceptance of adaptation strategies, (2) investigate the perception of changes / strategies in a people-centred approach, (3) develop target strategies to improve acceptance of adaptation, and (4) survey relevant existing land use and management systems related to good agricultural practices. The results will be integrated into synthesis reports/manuals for policymakers, outreach, and contribute to capacity development.
