In recent decades, soil and underground water pollution by liquid organic wastes and leachates has become a grave problem of global dimensions. There is a large class of polluted sites that is particularly difficult to clean. These are sites that have created broad and deep plumes in the soil under and around the source of pollutants. Because of the broad extent and large depth of such plumes, it seems that the only technically feasible and economically viable cleaning method for them is natural attenuation (NA). NA is achieved trough a combination of complex processes including dilution trough plume spreading, volatilization, intrinsic biodegradation (IB) effected by indigenous microorganisms, and vapor and biogas emission. The overall objective of the present proposal is to conduct a systematic experimental study of Natural Attenuation (NA) on two different scales, namely pore-scale, and to treat the results with proper theoretical modeling and scale-up methods, in order to develop a practical, true-to-mechanism and selfconsistent macroscopic model that will be a reliable predictive tool for the practitioner. The polluted site that will be used as generic will be an abandoned tar factory.
