Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Eidgenössische Forschungsanstalt für Wald, Schnee und Landschaft.The goal of this research project is to improve the understanding of of the physical processes which lead to avalanche formation and thereby improve avalanche forecasting. Leading Questions: - To understand the mechanics of avalanche formation; - Study the influence of meteorological variations on the stability of the snow pack; - Study the heat exchanges on the top surface, melting and now melt water infiltrates the snow pack and influences stability; - Plan and optimise supporting structures which prevent avalanche release; - Study the influence of stratification on the stability of the snow pack. Abstract: Avalanches occur when the snow pack becomes unstable due to changes in meteorological conditions such as intense new snowfall. The goal of this project is to improve the understanding of the mechanics of avalanche formation by using modern computer simulation methods. A two-dimensional finite element program capable of simulating the creeping deformation, temperature distribution and water transport in the alpine snow pack will be developed. The computer program will implement a novel finite element refinement technique in order to simulate thin weak layers which are believed to be responsible for avalanche formation. New numerical procedures to treat temperature dependent creep, heat transfer with phase change and unsaturated melt water transport will be developed. Model results will be validated by field observations and laboratory experiments.
